Deacon Mable's Corner

Deacon Mable Owens Clarke

*Always*Active*Every*Day*

for Soapstone Church!

Deacon Mable works every day for Soapstone Baptist Church! Maintenance; Publicity; Phone calls; Emails; Meetings; Financial; Book Tour Lectures and more meetings with the Church Board, plus her works as a Deacon in caring for individuals in the local community who are sick or need ministering.

Since her return to the Liberia Valley, Mable worked side by side with her parents in every aspect of church life.

As you have read in the history of Soapstone, Mable's family aren't just church members. Soapstone Baptist Church is the Living Legacy of her ancestors passed down generation after generation and it MUST LIVE ON!

From brush arbor to a crudely constructed wooden building that lasted 100 years and would have lasted more if it had not been torched by hate, to the present building constructed by the pastor and the local skills of the community members, this church has been the beating heart of the community for more than 150 years.

Deacon Mable will do everything in her ability to keep the church active,

spread the story of its history,

and share the love and blessings God has given her.

From Mable:

To my dearest and loving community,
For 22 years, Soapstone Baptist Church has held a monthly FishFry for the community
and folks who journeyed from far and wide.
September 18 and October 16, 2021 will be the final two FishFry meals served by the church.

It's time to retire the fish fryer.
We have met our greatest goal with all your help in 2020, the mortgage was completely paid.
I will be moving into phase 2, this will include the restoration of the school house where I personally attended. Soapstone Baptist Church will always remain an historic site.

In the future, we would like to hold weddings, family reunions and other functions at the church.
I've met thousands of amazing people during the monthly meals and speaking at different events,
and I am so grateful for all the support to keep this history of the Liberia Community alive.

THANK YOU all for helping us and for enjoying the cooking enough to keep coming back for more!

We welcome all to join us at service on Sundays at 11 am, and to come walk the grounds and see the sculpture,
the cemeteries and the view, sit under the boughs of the trees
and reminisce about the story of this community and experience God's Grace.

Please explore our website, Come by and walk the grounds and cemeteries, buy the book and read about Liberia
and learn more about African American history in the state and nation, and visit a beautiful part of South Carolina.

Blessings, Mable Owens Clarke
